Avocet

Avocet

Project Description:

Open Space Institute Land Trust (OSILT) is requesting $10,000,000 in Rural Greenbelt funds for the fee-simple acquisition of 2,364 acres located off Hyde Park Road in Adams Run. The Avocet tract remains one of the largest undeveloped tracts in the county, with a rich history dating back to the 18th Century and has significant conservation and recreational value. If acquired, OSILT will transfer the property to the South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) to own and manage as a public park and state forest. The tract is undeveloped and contains no structures, but it does include historic rice-culture features including impoundments, canals, levees, roads, and water control structures. SCFC will manage the forest in accordance with a site-specific management plan that balances preservation of sensitive historic and natural areas with sustainable forest management in productive upland stands.
