Project Description: 

Lowcountry Land Trust (LLT) is requesting $1,050,000 in Rural Greenbelt funds to support the acquisition of 22.82 acres across three contiguous parcels located just outside Charleston County’s urban growth boundary, off Humbert Road on Johns Island. This request is for both reimbursement and fee-simple acquisition. LLT recently purchased the 5-acre parcel (2500000011) and is currently under contract with CSX Transportation for two additional tracts approximating 17.82 acres of abandoned rail line right-of-way. The planned use for the subject property is a multi-use greenway corridor connecting greenspaces, neighborhoods, and commercial areas on Johns Island. The project will be designed to respect the conservation values of the property while providing improvements by capping the abandoned rail bed and establishing a pedestrian/bike trail providing public accessibility, mobility, and safety.
